Nollywood is proving to be more than just an entertainment powerhouse. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the Nigerian film industry created over 200,000 jobs in 2023. This is a big jump from the 40,000 jobs recorded in 2013. It shows an average job growth rate of 10 percent every year over the past decade.

A study by researchers Nnamdi Otuonye and Dr. Oshionebo Barth shared these findings. It showed that Nollywood has become an important source of income for many Nigerians working in different parts of the industry.

Besides direct acting and production roles, the industry created about 700,000 indirect jobs. These include film distribution, marketing, cinematography, equipment rental, sound production, costume design, catering, transportation, and logistics. This proves that Nollywood supports many sectors, not just the movie business.

The rise of Nollywood comes at a time when Nigeria’s labour market has been struggling. Analyst Doris Sasu noted that the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out around 1.8 million full-time jobs last year. Despite this, Nollywood remained strong, creating new opportunities for many.

Experts say the growth is due to the increasing demand for Nigerian movies, better digital production, and private investment. Otuonye stated that “film has overtaken agriculture as the fastest growing employer per Naira invested.”

PwC reports that Nollywood is the world’s second-largest film industry by volume, ahead of Hollywood and only behind Bollywood. In 2018, the industry generated around $590 million in revenue, adding to Nigeria’s economy.

Media economist Dr. Ifeoma Okonkwo said, “The impact of Nollywood on job creation is undeniable. It’s not just about the actors on screen. The industry supports a vast ecosystem from screenwriters and directors to editors, costume designers, and sound engineers.”

Lagos-based producer Chinedu Eze also shared, “The industry has given young people a platform to learn, earn, and innovate. Many of us started with nothing but a camera and a dream.”

The success of Nollywood has led to the growth of film schools, rental companies, and post-production studios. It has also encouraged small businesses to provide ticketing, distribution, and export services. These ventures are now a vital part of Nollywood’s growing value chain.
