Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has shared her perspective on the ongoing debate about whether actors secure roles based on talent or physical appearance. She emphasized that while talent is essential, looks play a significant role in showbiz, as appearances often influence audience engagement and business opportunities.
Speaking in an interview with Hip TV, Jegede stated, “There are many factors actors can rely on. It’s not just looks. But looks is very important because it’s showbiz. What you present to people determines the business you attract, so appearance matters a lot.”
She added that while some actors achieve success through skill, others leverage their physical attributes to stand out. “A lot of people get roles by excelling in other areas, not necessarily looks. But if your appearance is your strength, bring it forward. It happens in every industry,” she explained.
On the topic of payment in Nollywood, Jegede highlighted that compensation often depends on experience, milestones, and contributions to the industry. “It depends on your milestone and the dues you’ve paid. If you’ve been here long enough and paid your dues, you will be paid your worth,” she said.
Jegede also praised the growth of Nollywood over the years, noting that the industry now provides a sustainable income for actors. “I can’t speak for everybody, but for me, Nollywood pays the bills. Not all the bills, but it does cover a lot. I’m very happy with where we are now compared to before,” she added.
Her comments underscore the balance between talent, experience, and appearance in shaping successful acting careers in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
