Online personality and outspoken critic, VeryDarkMan, is not happy with a new Nollywood movie that appears to be based on his life. The film, VeryDarkBlackMan, premiered on YouTube four days ago and has already gained over 100,000 views. Veteran actor Gentle Jack plays the lead role, but the man who inspired it is far from impressed.

VeryDarkMan shared his thoughts in a video on Instagram. He said that while he appreciated the recognition, the film left him feeling uneasy. “To be very honest I am not even happy with it, while even watching it I even cringed,” he said.

Though he praised Gentle Jack’s status as a Nollywood legend, he felt left out of a story that belongs to him. According to VeryDarkMan, no one reached out to get his side of the story. “There is no way Gentle Jack would send me a message and I would not respond in less than 30 minutes,” he explained.

He made it clear that he had nothing to hide and would have been open about every detail of his past — even the controversial parts. “I will give you the whole story down to when I was doing sexual content, the ladies I have slept with, the people I sold my explicit content to…”

He added that he isn’t chasing a clean image. “I do not fear anybody, I do not have plans to be a good person or let people see me as a good man.”

What bothered him the most was how the film ended up looking. To him, it didn’t tell his real story — it mocked it. “They went to make a caricature of me and Koko P,” he said, sounding both disappointed and frustrated.

As the movie continues to trend, the question remains: should filmmakers involve their real-life inspirations, or is creative freedom enough?
