The Nigerian gospel music community is in deep mourning following the passing of beloved singer and evangelist Bunmi Akinnanu Adeoye, popularly known as Bunmi Akinnanu or “Omije Ojumi”.

The family confirmed her death in an official statement released on Tuesday, January 14, 2026. The statement was shared via fellow gospel artist Alayo Melody’s Instagram page. It read:

“With great sadness 💔😭 we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnanu Adeoye (OMIJE OJUMI), who passed away on 12th January 2026 at a Lagos hospital in Nigeria. May God grant her eternal rest.”

Bunmi’s death followed months of battling a serious leg ailment that caused persistent bleeding and swelling. In late 2025, a viral video from a prayer service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, showed her seated with her leg extended. She received intense prayers for healing. The presiding cleric noted she had persistent bleeding in her leg, which sparked concern, prayer vigils, and widespread support on social media.

The exact cause of death has not been officially disclosed beyond the prolonged illness.

Bunmi began her musical journey at the age of 10 in a Christian home. She later studied Industrial Relations and Personnel Management and worked in banking. She eventually left her banking career to dedicate herself fully to gospel music.

She rose to national prominence with her breakthrough hit “Omije Ojumi” (meaning Tears in My Eyes). The song became a deeply emotional anthem that resonated with Nigerians facing hardship. It also became a staple in churches and homes.

Bunmi released several other inspiring tracks, including Iba Praise, Kò Tó, Ogo Foruko Re, and Ma Sunkun Mo. She became a respected voice in the gospel industry, known for her faith-centered ministry.

Tributes have poured in from fans, colleagues, and well-wishers. One friend said:

“It was amazing to see… She got sick and it was a struggle and we believed God would heal her. Her death is such a shock to me, she died so young.”

The gospel music world has lost a shining light whose songs brought comfort and hope to millions. May her soul rest in perfect peace.
