Early Life

Christian Ogbonna Chiwetalu Agu was born on 5 March 1956 in Amokwe, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. He attended Municipal Council School and Saint Luke’s Primary School, both in Ogui, for his primary education, before completing his secondary schooling at the College of Immaculate Conception, Uwani, in 1977. He travelled to West Germany, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Dramatic Arts from Munich College in 1981.

Career

Chiwetalu Agu’s professional career began in 1981, not in film but in television, where he joined the Nigerian Television Authority and appeared in the NTA Channel 8 Enugu soap opera ‘Ikoro’ and later ‘Ripples.’ In 1983, he formed the Inspirers Theatre Group, which performed extensively around Nigeria. He went on to feature in the acclaimed NTA adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s ‘Things Fall Apart,’ playing Anikwu, a father-in-law of the lead character Okonkwo.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Agu has appeared in several hundred Nollywood films, including ‘Issakaba,’ ‘Old School,’ ‘Living in Bondage,’ ‘Nkwocha’ and, more recently, ‘Ada Omo Daddy.’ He is celebrated for his fluency in Igbo language slangs and inventive clichรฉs, a distinctive comedic style that has made him a household name. He won the 2012 Nollywood Movie Award for Best Actor in an Indigenous Movie for ‘Nkwocha,’ and was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2008 Africa Movie Academy Awards for ‘Across the Niger.’ He turned 70 on 5 March 2026, prompting widespread tributes celebrating his career.

Personal Life

Chiwetalu Agu is married to Nkechi Agu, who hails from Mbaise, Imo State, and the couple have five children. In 2021, he was arrested and briefly detained by the Nigerian Army after appearing in public draped in a Biafran flag in Onitsha, Anambra State.

With more than four decades in front of the camera and a body of work spanning hundreds of films, Chiwetalu Agu remains one of Nollywood’s most distinctive and enduring veteran actors.
