Early Life

Amuta Okwute, known professionally as Amuta Stone, was born in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria, to a father from Kogi State and a mother from Ebonyi State, giving her both Igala and Igbo heritage. Though her story began in Zaria, she grew up primarily in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, before starting secondary school at Word of Faith in Benin City and later moving to Abuja, where she completed her education at Command Day Secondary School. She went on to earn a degree in Business Information Systems from UCSI University in Malaysia, and also works as a website developer.

Career

Amuta Stone describes herself first as a storyteller who happens to work in music and film, blending Soul, Jazz and EDM, primarily house, into a sound she says draws its colour from jazz, blues and African influences without being confined to any of them. Her path into the genre began with an early love of electronic and techno music, before discovering jazz after secondary school. In 2010, while signed to 1449 Productions in Lokoja, she committed to developing a jazz-rooted sound, which gradually blended with her long-standing love of electronic music into the style she performs today.

She has collaborated with Nigerian rapper Modenine on the early hip-hop track “My Country,” and worked with Ugandan musician and politician Bobi Wine on a collaboration released during the COVID-19 lockdown centred on themes of hope and unity. Amuta Stone has shared the stage with major Nigerian acts including Asa, TuFace (2Baba), M.I Abaga and Made Kuti, and opened twice for Asa’s live concerts in 2021 and 2022. She has also performed at high-profile events including the Nigerian Special Awards at Aso Villa and former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Democracy Works book launch.

Personal Life

Amuta Stone has cited her late sister Tina’s creativity as one of the personal influences that continues to shape her music, alongside the different cities she has called home.

With a sound built on storytelling across soul, jazz and electronic influences, Amuta Stone continues to expand into film and television scoring while preparing new house music collaborations and a return to touring.
