Early Life
Osabuohien Osaretin, known professionally as Sarz, was born on March 17, 1989, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. He began his musical journey in 2007, producing Lord of Ajasa’s “See Drama,” marking his first full credit production. Sarz is renowned for his signature tag, “Sarz on the beat,” which precedes many of his productions.
Career
Sarz’s career took off with the 2010 hit “Jor Oh” by Jahbless, featuring artists like Durella, RuggedMan, and Ice Prince. He continued to produce chart-topping tracks for artists such as eLDee, Skales, Goldie Harvey, and Reminisce. In 2011, he produced the entire album Undeniable for eLDee, except for the track “We Made It.” His work on “Kako Bi Chicken” earned a nomination for “Best Street Hop” at The Headies in 2012.
In 2013, Sarz contributed to two songs on Wizkid’s Ayo album: “Jaiye Jaiye” featuring Femi Kuti and “Kilofe.” He also produced the official Hennessy Artistry 2014 theme song, “Dance Go (Eau de Vie),” featuring Wizkid and 2Face Idibia.
Sarz’s influence extends beyond Nigeria; he co-produced Drake’s “One Dance,” which became a global hit. He has also worked with international artists like Beyoncé and Skepta.
In 2021, Sarz released “Monalisa” with Lojay, a track that gained significant attention. The song was certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in 2023.
Sarz’s innovative production techniques have shaped the sound of contemporary Afrobeats. He is also the co-founder of The Sarz Academy Foundation, Africa’s first music producer academy, aiming to mentor and develop the next generation of producers.
