Veteran Nigerian rapper M.I Abaga has made it clear that the rise of new-age rappers in Nigeria does not shake his confidence. While many may assume that the dominance of younger talents like Odumodublvck and Blaqbonez could push older rappers aside, M.I isn’t buying into that narrative.
In a recent interview with Jay On Air, the iconic lyricist opened up about how he views the current hip-hop landscape. He praised the fresh talents taking over the scene, acknowledging their creativity and work ethic. Still, he made it known that he isn’t intimidated.
M.I said, “The likes of Odumodublvck, Shallipopi, Ladipoe, Falz are the rappers who are currently making waves, but I have not felt like I’m the old guy in terms of skills… What I care about is if you and I were in the studio, am I with somebody who can outrap me?”
He further expressed admiration for the moves Odumodu and Blaqbonez are making but clarified that their popularity doesn’t make him feel threatened. “I love what Odumodu is doing. I love what Blaqbonez is doing. I love their talent but it doesn’t intimidate me,” he added.
According to him, there’s a difference between commercial heat and lyrical ability. He even referenced stars like Wizkid and Davido, calling them “in their red-hot moment,” but distancing himself from the comparison, making it clear that his artistry stands in its own lane.
M.I’s take has sparked fresh conversations in music circles, especially among hip-hop lovers who still regard him as a benchmark for lyrical greatness. Whether new or old, it’s clear that M.I remains confident in his skills and secure in his legacy.
