The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has taken major action against digital piracy by suspending MovieBox.ng, a website known for streaming pirated content. This includes movies, music, and even live sports. The suspension, which took effect on July 20, 2025, is part of a broader effort to clean up the country’s digital space.
The NCC worked with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) to take the site offline. According to the NCC, this move comes under its renewed anti-piracy campaign, and rights owners in the entertainment industry have welcomed the action.

The Commission explained that MovieBox.ng had been operating as part of a larger network that uses clone and mirror sites to keep pirated content accessible. These types of domains often pop up after one is blocked, allowing pirates to continue their illegal activities.
NCC Director-General Dr. John Asein thanked NiRA for acting quickly. He also called on internet service providers and digital platforms to assist in stopping piracy by responding to takedown notices, as required under Nigeria’s Copyright Act of 2022.
The NCC is not stopping at just MovieBox.ng. The commission says it’s already working to disable other connected sites that may serve as backups for the suspended platform.
Authorities are also warning the public to stay away from illegal streaming sites. These platforms don’t just break copyright laws—they can also harm users. Many of them are known to carry malware, steal user data, or trick users into financial scams.
This crackdown is part of the NCC’s “Stand Together Against Online Piracy (STOP)” campaign, launched earlier this year to tackle the growing problem of digital copyright abuse.
