Early Life

Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, studied business and administration in London, while also attending the Christine Shaw School of Beauty Science, where she obtained a certificate in cosmetology. She later earned a Higher National Diploma in Business Studies from Hendon College of Technology in 1969.

Career

Taiwo Ajai-Lycett worked in various roles to support her studies, including as a waitress, personal secretary at the Post Office, and in advertising. At 15, she became a mother, which strained her relationship with her family, but she persevered, enrolling in evening classes. She married David Akinduro in 1959, but the marriage ended due to domestic violence. She later remarried Thomas Lycett.

Her acting career began unexpectedly in 1966 when she performed in Wole Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel at the Royal Court Theatre in London. Encouraged by the experience, she pursued acting full-time, enrolling at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She returned to Nigeria in 1971, where she became involved in the film industry, starring in productions like Tinsel and Oloibiri.

Taiwo has received numerous accolades, including the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2006 and the Industry Merit Award at the 2022 Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards. She is a Fellow of the Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists (SONTA).

Her contributions to African theatre and her advocacy for womenโ€™s rights continue to shape the entertainment industry. Taiwo’s accolades, including the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and the Industry Merit Award, solidify her legacy as one of Nigeriaโ€™s most influential figures in entertainment.
