Early Life
Uzoamaka Aniunoh was born on 10 April 1990 and raised in Onitsha, Nigeria. She is the first of four siblings. As a teenager, she enjoyed acting with friends, recreating scenes from Nollywood movies by stars like Genevieve Nnaji and Rita Dominic. She earned a degree in English and History from the University of Nigeria and completed a Master’s in Creative Writing at the University of Birmingham.
Career
After moving to England in 2015, Uzoamaka returned to Nigeria in 2017 and successfully auditioned for the popular series MTV Shuga, landing the role of Cynthia. She starred in the series from 2018 to 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she reprised her role in MTV Shuga Alone Together, a special edition filmed remotely by cast members to highlight pandemic challenges across Africa.
In 2019, she played a lead role in the short film Stuck, and in 2020, she starred in the acclaimed period drama Riona. That same year, Uzoamaka took a main role in Ìfé, recognized as the first Nollywood lesbian film, earning her the Kim Renders Memorial Award for Outstanding Performance in 2021.
Uzoamaka appeared in several short films, including Ananze and the Zipman and Sister Rose. She gained recognition as a breakthrough actress for her lead role in the comedy Ponzi. In 2022, she starred in Diiche, Showmax’s first Nigerian original limited series, which earned multiple nominations at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
In 2023, she also featured in the award-winning fantasy thriller Mami Wata, Nigeria’s entry for the 96th Academy Awards, and received a Best Supporting Actress nomination. She also made her directorial debut with Love Language, a short film she wrote and starred in.
In 2024, Uzoamaka appeared in over six films, including The Weekend, earning a Best Actress nomination at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, and starred in With Difficulty Comes Ease on Amazon Prime Video, portraying a grieving widow navigating cultural pressures. She also featured in Phoenix Fury, which won Best Film and Best Director at AFRIFF.
