Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage has opened up about her journey into Mavin Records and the emotional bond she shared with the label’s team. In a recent chat on Afrobeats Intelligence, the “Somebody’s Son” singer revealed that she actually asked Don Jazzy multiple times to sign her when he launched Mavin.

At the time, Tiwa wasn’t signed to Mo’Hits and didn’t want to miss the opportunity again when Mavin began. According to her, she was very persistent. “I don’t have shame,” she admitted while recalling how often she begged. Eventually, Don Jazzy gave in and said yes. “He was just like, you know what? I don’t have a first lady,” she recalled.

Tiwa Sawage described her time at Mavin as deeply meaningful. Beyond the business side, she said what stood out most was the genuine support system within the label. She remembered moments when something would happen online and she’d immediately run to Don Jazzy’s room, where the entire team—Dr. Sid, Reekado Banks, Tega, and others—would gather to talk through things, cry if necessary, and comfort one another.

“Being with a label, they don’t really care about your personal stuff,” Tiwa added, pointing out the contrast between her current experience and what she once had with Mavin. She confessed that she misses the close bond, saying it felt like home.

Her words paint a picture of what true support in the music industry can look like—something that often gets lost when business takes center stage. For Tiwa, Mavin was more than just a label. It was family.
