After clinching their 10th WAFCON title in Morocco, the Super Falcons were treated to a hero’s welcome back home. But the eye-popping N4.952 billion reward they received has stirred serious debate across Nigeria. Many citizens believe the sum could have gone a long way in addressing the wage crisis affecting key sectors like health, education, and security.
Each of the 24 Super Falcons players was rewarded with $100,000, while the 11 technical crew members got $50,000 each, using an exchange rate of ₦1,562/$1. That alone amounts to over ₦4.6 billion. Added to the ₦350 million from the Nigerian Governors Forum, the total cash splash stood at nearly ₦5 billion. President Tinubu also awarded them national honours and promised three-bedroom apartments.

While the team’s achievement deserves applause, many Nigerians are struggling to see the logic behind such extravagant spending. A trending argument is that the same money could have covered one month’s salary for 16,000 doctors earning ₦250,000 each. For teachers earning ₦66,000, it could pay 66,000 of them. As for the lowest-ranked police officers who earn as little as ₦51,000, over 78,000 of them could have received a month’s pay.
The backlash highlights growing frustration with government priorities. While sports achievements bring pride, many believe that essential workers are being left behind. Commentators argue that national development should place more focus on the well-being of professionals who directly impact lives daily.
Father Kelvin Ugwu, one of the critics, pointed out that the total gifts far outweighed the $1 million prize for winning WAFCON. He noted that including the housing gifts and entertainment costs, the full celebration could exceed $5 million. For a country battling economic hardship, many see this as misplaced generosity.
