Nigerian singer Mr Real has sparked a heated conversation in the music industry after expressing his concerns about the growing lack of originality in Afrobeats. In a recent interview with HipTV, the singer stated that many songs in the genre are either copied or recycled. He believes this trend leaves little room for fresh and authentic sounds. According to him, intellectual property theft has become a serious issue that affects both rising talents and established stars.
Mr Real explained that many artists often lose their creative ideas because someone else acts on them first. He said, “If you don’t record your song fast, someone else might take it and make it theirs.” The singer noted that this issue is especially tough on upcoming artists who don’t have the platform or fan base to speak out when their work is taken. As a result, many young talents end up losing their ideas without any recognition or credit.
He also pointed out that the problem isn’t limited to new artists. Mr Real referenced past controversies involving veteran musicians, such as Blackface, who have accused others of stealing their songs. He added that it’s ironic because some of these same veterans have also used other people’s work without permission.
Addressing the recent debate about whether Rema may have taken inspiration from Omah Lay, Mr Real said such situations are common in the industry. He explained that Afrobeats is full of shared ideas. However, the lack of proper structures makes it easy for intellectual property theft to thrive.
He concluded by calling for more accountability and stronger protection of artists’ works. Mr Real emphasized that creativity should be respected. In his view, the growth of Afrobeats depends on how well the industry protects originality and gives credit where it is due.
