Nollywood actor and director Stanley Amandi has been named as a key civilian suspect in an alleged violent plot to overthrow the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
The veteran Nollywood actor is a former chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Enugu State chapter, and was reportedly arrested by security forces in September 2025. However, details of his involvement only became public after the conclusion of a military investigation.
According to intelligence sources, Amandi was allegedly recruited as a “propagandist” for a group made up of both military officers and civilians. While he was not accused of carrying weapons, investigators claim his role was to manage public narratives and shape messaging to support a planned illegal takeover.
The plot reportedly included an assassination list targeting top government officials, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that the investigation is now complete. In an official statement, the military said:
“The findings identified a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government.”
The DHQ added:
“The actions uncovered were inconsistent with the values and ethics of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”
While the implicated military officers are set to face court-martial proceedings, the DHQ confirmed that civilians named in the probe, including Amandi, will be tried in civil courts.
Reacting to the development, APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe commented on the alleged leadership of the plot, naming Brigadier General Musa Abubakar. In a public post, he stated:
“I was informed that Musa Abubakar was the one who led the coup.”
He further warned:
“President Tinubu is not joking. Those involved will be dealt with appropriately.”
Stanley Amandi’s professional work includes directing the 2008 films The Album and Tiger King, as well as acting in the 2024 movie Once Upon a Dream.
As of now, no statement has been released by Amandi or his legal team regarding the allegations or his detention.
