Nigerian singer Simi has addressed the resurfacing of decade-old tweets after her recent public call for the castration and burning of rapists sparked intense debate online. The controversy escalated when TikToker Mirabel, whose alleged assault initially prompted Simi’s reaction, later admitted that her claims were fabricated.
In a detailed statement shared online, Simi denied accusations of perversion. She explained that the tweets were posted in 2012 when she was 23 years old and assisting at her mother’s daycare center.
“I’m not here to make excuses because I don’t have anything to make excuses for. What I can’t let anyone do is twist my story to fit false narratives.”
The resurfaced posts referenced a four-year-old having a “crush” and “acting like he wana loc lip.” Another tweet jokingly mentioned a child trying to put his hand inside her skirt. Critics described the comments as inappropriate.
However, Simi clarified that the posts reflected innocent observations of playful children. She insisted there was no harmful intent behind them.
“Kids are cute and lovable. I want to hug, kiss and cuddle them… Nothing I tweeted was from perversion.”
Addressing the backlash, the singer accused critics of being a “faceless mob” attempting to weaponize her past statements to undermine her anti-rape advocacy. She acknowledged that she was not famous at the time and did not anticipate such scrutiny.
“I was not famous, so maybe if I was, I would have understood that anything is open to whatever interpretation.”
Simi also revealed that her team has begun deleting the old tweets to protect her family, although she initially resisted the move.
She concluded by reaffirming her stance against sexual violence.
“I have always spoken against rape and sexual assault even before you knew I existed. It’s not a costume I’m wearing, it’s who I am… I said stop raping women. I stand by it.”
