Early Life
Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, Popularly known as Skales is a native of Edo State, was born and raised in Kaduna State. He grew up in a single-parent household, with his mother working various menial jobs to support him.
Skales developed an interest in music while frequently visiting his mother’s cassette store.
During his time at the University of Jos, he crossed paths with producers Jeremiah Gyang and Jesse Jagz, which helped shape his musical journey.
He participated in the Zain Tru Search Competition and won the North Central region in 2008.
After leaving the University of Jos in his junior year, he moved to Lead City University, where he graduated with a degree in office management and technology.
His debut single, “Must Shine,” garnered widespread acclaim for its energy and message.
In a 2013 interview, Skales described himself as an entertainer whose music is deeply influenced by his environment.
His 2009 track “Heading for a Grammy” was inspired by Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks,” serving as an anthem of self-empowerment and reflecting the struggles Skales faced at the time.
Career And Achievements
In 2009, Skales signed with E.M.E and, soon after, released hits “Mukulu” and “Keresimesi,” both produced by Sarz.
Then, the “Keresimesi” music video, directed by Clarence Peters, was uploaded to YouTube on November 28, 2011.
Furthermore, Skales contributed significantly to E.M.E’s debut album, Empire Mates State of Mind (2012), collaborating on five singles.
Additionally, he toured the U.S. with E.M.E acts and supported Wizkid’s 2012 London tour.
In October 2013, Skales performed at Felabration, honoring Fela Kuti’s legacy.
However, Skales left E.M.E in February 2014 after his four-year contract expired.
E.M.E ultimately chose not to renew his contract, citing insufficient return on investment.
Later, in May 2014, Skales launched OHK Music, signing various artists and producer Drey Beatz.
He then released “Shake Body” on May 6, 2014, as the lead single for Man of the Year.
Subsequently, the “Shake Body” music video debuted on YouTube on July 22, 2014, followed by a video competition.
Finally, Skales denied rumors of signing with Timaya’s Dem Mama Records after leaving E.M.E in February 2014.
