Ayra Starr has revealed the strong role her mother played in launching her music career, while also sharing her thoughts on Afrobeats’ “Big Three” and her upcoming Hollywood debut.
The Afropop star spoke during an interview on HOT 97, where she reflected on her journey into the global spotlight. According to Starr, her mother pushed her to share her talent online while she was still in school.
“She used to be like, ‘I’m not sending you any money in school if you don’t post… God has given you a gift, post on Instagram.’”
The singer said the encouragement played a major role in helping her gain visibility early in her career.
Starr also shared a humorous childhood story about a “contract” she signed with her mother when she was nine years old. After borrowing 15 naira, her mother reportedly made her promise to repay a much larger amount once she became successful.
“She made me sign the contract… and she has it till now.”
When asked about the Afrobeats hierarchy, Starr named the artists she considers the genre’s “solid big three.” Her picks included Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, and Rema.
The singer also spoke about her personal life and a recent move to New York. She described living in an unfurnished apartment during winter as a challenging but motivating experience.
“I was just inside with no furniture in my apartment yet… it was good though, it kept me hungry.”
Discussing her single “Where Do We Go,” Starr said the song allowed her to express emotions from a past relationship.
“I have to protect my peace.”
She added that she maintains strict boundaries when dating.
“If a guy only texts after 11 PM or is still texting his ex, he is immediately blocked, deleted, and unfollowed.”
Starr also confirmed that she will make her Hollywood debut in Children of Blood and Bone alongside Viola Davis and Idris Elba.
Reflecting on her journey so far, the singer emphasized the importance of staying focused on her purpose.
“The hardest lesson I’ve learned is not forgetting why I came here in the first place.”
