Pop star Billie Eilish is facing backlash following her acceptance speech at the 68th Grammy Awards on February 1, 2026. The singer won Song of the Year for her track “Wildflower.”
While accepting the award, Eilish made a political statement about immigration and land rights.
“As grateful as I feel, I honestly don’t feel like I need to say anything, but that no one is illegal on stolen land. It’s just really hard to know what to say and what to do right now. And I just I feel really hopeful in this room, and I feel like we just need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting, and our voices really do matter, and the people matter. F-CK ICE.”
Her remarks referenced U.S. immigration enforcement and the historical displacement of Indigenous peoples.
Following the speech, critics accused Eilish of hypocrisy. Some pointed to her ownership of luxury homes, including a reported $14 million mansion in Los Angeles, built on land historically associated with the Tongva tribes.
British journalist Julia Hartley wrote on X:

Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah also criticized land acknowledgments, arguing they lack meaning without material action.
Another criticism came from the EndWokeness account on X, which also joined the backlash against Eilish’s statement. The account wrote:
“Billie Eilish calls America ‘stolen land.’ Ok, Billie. Your $14,000,000 mansion in LA is built where the Tongva tribes once lived. Any plans on returning it?”
However, supporters of Eilish defended her remarks, pointing to her consistent history of activism and large-scale philanthropy. They noted that she has donated substantial portions of her earnings to social and environmental causes.
Eilish recently received the 2026 MLK Jr. Beloved Community Environmental Justice Award on January 17 in Atlanta, where she was honored for her activism.

At that ceremony, she spoke about civil rights and environmental concerns.
“We’re seeing our neighbors being kidnapped, peaceful protesters being assaulted and murdered, our civil rights being stripped, resources to fight the climate crisis being cut for fossil fuels and animal agriculture destroying our planet, and people’s access to food and health care becoming a privilege for the wealthy instead of a new basic human right for all Americans.”
She added:
“It is very clear that protecting our planet and our communities is not a priority for this administration.”
Eilish has made significant donations in recent years. She reportedly donated $11.5 million from her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour to climate justice, food access, and emissions reduction organizations through her Changemaker Program. She also reportedly gave away 22% of her net worth in October 2025.
