Actor and television icon Malcolm-Jamal Warner has died at the age of 54. The beloved performer, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, drowned off the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday afternoon.
Costa Rican National Police confirmed that Warner got caught in a rip current while swimming near Cocles Beach in Limon. Bystanders pulled him from the water and brought him to shore, where emergency responders treated him. Despite their efforts, the Costa Rican Red Cross declared him dead at the scene. Authorities later confirmed asphyxia as the official cause of death and identified Warner as a tourist.
Warner rose to fame in 1984 when he joined The Cosby Show, where he played Theo Huxtable for all eight seasons. He earned an Emmy nomination for his performance and quickly became a fixture in American pop culture.
Beyond The Cosby Show, Warner co-starred in Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and most recently portrayed Dr. AJ Austin in Fox’s The Resident for five seasons. His film credits include The List, Fool’s Gold, and Shot.
A lifelong performer, Warner began acting in the early 1980s, with early roles in Matt Houston and Fame. Born on August 18, 1970, he studied at The Professional Children’s School in New York City.
In 2015, Warner won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance with Robert Glasper Experiment and Lalah Hathaway. In June 2024, he launched the podcast Not All Hood with Candace Kelly, aiming to address mental health and cultural issues within the Black community.
Warner recently told People that the show allowed him to “be as vulnerable as I allow myself to be.” His death marks a profound loss for the entertainment world.
