The family of the late Nigerian singer Mohbad has announced that his partner, Omowunmi Adebanjo, should stop using the surname “Aloba” until a court-ordered DNA test confirms the paternity of her son, Liam. Their statement marks a new phase in the ongoing dispute surrounding the singer’s death, his estate, and family matters.

In the statement released by the family heads, they said, “For the avoidance of doubt, no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo, as the required Yoruba traditional rites (payment of bride price) were never completed.” They added that Wunmi is “barred from using the Aloba name both publicly and privately until Liam’s paternity is established.”

The family also announced the appointment of a legal representative to handle matters relating to the DNA test and Mohbad’s estate. According to the statement, “The Aloba family has unanimously appointed Oladayo Ogungbe, Esq., as the sole and official legal representative of the family in all matters relating to the DNA case and the estate of the late Ilerioluwa Aloba.”

They further listed the individuals chosen to manage the singer’s royalties, assets and intellectual property. In their words, “These administrators are authorised to immediately apply for letters of administration to lawfully manage all estate assets… The family has left one slot open for Wunmi Adebanjo to join the administrators if and when a valid court-ordered DNA test confirms that Liam is the biological son of the late Mohbad.”

Reacting to the family’s directive, Wunmi’s lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, insisted she cannot be stopped from using the name. He said, “Nobody can stop her from bearing the name Aloba. That was her husband’s name, and she has every legal right to use it.”
