Spotify is developing a new feature called “Page Match” that aims to connect physical books with their audiobook versions. The tool, currently in beta testing, allows users to switch easily between reading a book and listening to the audiobook.
According to code strings discovered within the Spotify app on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the feature uses a smartphone camera to identify text. By scanning a page, Spotify applies optical character recognition (OCR) to match the text with the exact moment in the audiobook.
Spotify’s internal onboarding text describes the feature as a way to “match your progress from the book page to the audiobook — and back again!” Another label in the app reads, “Jump between the book (or Ebook) and the audiobook [Beta].”
The technology works in both directions. Scanning a page takes the user to the exact point in the audiobook. Pausing the audiobook also reveals the corresponding page number in the physical book, making it easier to switch formats without losing progress.
The app includes guidance for users, stating, “Use your camera to match your progress from the book page to the audiobook – and back again!” If the scan fails, users are prompted to try a nearby page with text.
While Amazon already offers a similar feature called Whispersync for Kindle and Audible, Spotify’s Page Match stands out by supporting physical paper books. The feature is expected to launch only in regions where Spotify’s audiobook service is available, including the US, UK, Canada, parts of Europe, and Australia. No official release date has been announced.
