Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her family have announced the heartbreaking loss of one of her twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi. The young boy passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after a brief illness. The news was shared by Omawumi Ogbe, Adichie’s spokesperson, highlighting the family’s grief and emphasizing the importance of privacy during this difficult period.
The family’s statement read: “The family dey devastated by dis ogbonge loss, and we dey beg make dia privacy dey respected during dis incredibly difficult time.” Fans and colleagues have extended condolences as both the literary and entertainment communities rally around the author.
This tragedy comes months after Adichie revealed in February 2025 that she and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, had welcomed twin boys through surrogacy. At the time, she encouraged women to embrace non-traditional paths to motherhood. “I want make more women no dey feel ashamed of talking about reaching motherhood tru non-traditional means,” she said. She added, “Wetin I bin tok about having my twins tru surrogacy na true bicos e get some tins wey you simply no fit hide. You no fit hide di existence of two perfect human beings.”
Surrogacy is a process where another woman carries and delivers a child for intended parents. Typically, the child comes from the intended parents’ sperm and eggs, which doctors implant into the surrogate’s womb.
The loss of Nkanu adds to Adichie’s history of personal tragedies. Her father, Professor James Nwoye Adichie, a professor of statistics, died from kidney failure complications during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Her mother, the first female registrar at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, passed away several months later in March 2021.
Chimamanda Adichie remains a celebrated feminist and award-winning author, recognized globally for her contributions to literature and women’s equality. She has won numerous honors, including the Women’s Prize for Fiction. Despite recent losses, her voice continues to influence both literary and social conversations.
The family is mourning privately, and the public has been asked to respect their space while offering condolences and support during this challenging time.
