Nigerian highlife legend Mike Ejeagha has died at the age of 95. He was known for his deep storytelling and his popular song Gwo Gwo Gwo, which inspired many people over the years.

His music recently found new life through the viral Gwo Gwo Challenge on social media, showing how much his work still connects with fans today.

Ejeagha passed away at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after a long illness. Just one day later, he was buried—following his personal wish to be laid to rest within 24 hours of his death.

Mike Ejeagha’s quick burial surprised many, but his eldest son, Emmanuel Ejeagha, said it was exactly what his father wanted.

“I contacted members of my family and informed them that my father made a wish that he should be laid to rest 24 hours after his death. He told me as his first son that he should not be embalmed. I also summoned a meeting of my kindred and we discussed extensively. Even Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State was informed about it and they all agreed that whatever was his wish should be kept.”

Although the burial has already happened, Emmanuel said that the funeral and celebrations of his life will come later.

Governor Peter Mbah also honoured the late music icon. He called Ejeagha “a gifted musician whose humility, storytelling through music, and cultural influence made him a timeless figure across generations.”

The governor added that his death is a big loss to his family, the people of Enugu, the music industry, and Nigeria.

Mike Ejeagha may be gone, but his music, wisdom, and legacy will always live on.
